Ross Cobb‘s journey into winemaking began quickly after graduating from the University of Santa Cruz when he established a soil science lab at Ferrari Carrano. Shortly thereafter he went on to become the enologist and viticulturist at Williams Selyem before migrating to Flowers Winery where he would eventually take over as head winemaker for nine vintages. Capping his tour of the Sonoma Coast, Ross took the reins as head winemaker for Hirsch Vineyards for six years.

Throughout his time spent working with some of the most heralded Sonoma Coast vineyards, Ross traveled to Burgundy over 15 times to continue the growth of his craft from the origins of Pinot Noir.

Cobb Wines is the family project he began with his parents in 2001. The estate vineyard Coastlands had its original blocks planted in 1989 by his mother Diane, representing some of the oldest Pinot Noir plantings in California. Coastlands is also one of the most westerly vineyards in Sonoma County sitting just 3 miles from the Pacific Ocean at 1150 ft above sea level.

Ross is known for championing a complex, cool-climate style of Pinot Noir that captures the sense of place from which the varietal was grown. Ross makes Pinot Noir from the Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley, along with a bit of Riesling and Chardonnay. Today, Ross not only farms the estate himself but also lives on property with his wife and daughter.
